# 105 Podcast: The Perspective And Role Of The Plan Sponsor

Takeaways from a leading plan sponsor

Our ninth podcast episode is a bonus episode (http://donezra.com/podcasts/). In the previous eight episodes we had a little bit of a structure. First we had one on the prevailing issues and problems in the world of retirement today; then half a dozen, each focused mainly on one aspect of the challenge; and an eighth one, on innovative solutions being implemented or considered.

But when we had a chance to chat with Cindy Deere, we simply had to do an additional one, as Cindy herself and Shell, where she serves as the general manager for their US pension plans, are both leading lights in the field. So we took the opportunity, and I’m glad we did. Listen to her thoughts, about Shell’s plans and employee engagement and retirement preparation, not to mention her own prospective graduation to Life Two, and you’ll hear her background and global experience come through.

This interview was recorded in the summer of 2019.

On a personal note, I thank Cindy again for the practical hands-on corporate experience that showed itself as she sent me comments on the draft of Life Two that she previewed. And I wish her great joy and fulfillment as she embarks on the adventure of her own Life Two!

I have written about retirement planning before and some of that material also relates to topics or issues that are being discussed here. Where relevant I draw on material from three sources: The Retirement Plan Solution (co-authored with Bob Collie and Matt Smith, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2009), my foreword to Someday Rich (by Timothy Noonan and Matt Smith, also published by Wiley, 2012), and my occasional column The Art of Investment in the FT Money supplement of The Financial Times, published in the UK. I am grateful to the other authors and to The Financial Times for permission to use the material here.
